Cervical Health Awareness Month
An abnormal Pap smear means that there is abnormal cell growth on the surface of the cervix, which might include precancerous or cancerous cells. The most common cause of an abnormal Pap smear is infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). There are many types of HPV, some of which have been linked to cervical cancer. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the U.S. and is particularly common among young women. Because the virus is so common, it is important to take the steps to prevent spreading the virus.
